Interventions

Our findings informed the development of several interventions and recommendations that have been utilised by the NBCSP or implemented in research and practice including:

Redesigned invitation letters

Our revamped invitation letter prototype included:

  • Brief step-by-step instructions to increase understanding of the screening process and boost their confidence to participate before the recipient opens the kit.
  • A peel off reminder sticker to use as a visual prompt and reminder to complete the kit.
  • A popular graphic highlighting high survival rates when bowel cancer is caught early.
  • A deadline for returning the kit.
  • A QR code to web content that addresses common barriers to screening.

Videos

Using existing promotional video content, we created a video-bundle for use in the SMARTER Screen SMS GP intervention trial. This bundle combined accessible instructions with several personal stories that resonated with, and motivated, our audience based on consumer evaluations.

SMS

Based on our findings regarding consumer preferences, we made the following recommendations to optimise SMS reminders for NBCSP kit uptake:

  • Use SMS as a primary reminder method, given its high acceptability, immediacy, and low burden for recipients.
  • Include a clear behavioural prompt paired with a practical visual cue (e.g., suggesting placement of the kit in a visible location) to support follow-through.
  • Time reminders for 2–5 weeks after kit receipt
  • Limit reminders to no more than two messages to minimise fatigue.
  • Schedule delivery for weekdays around midday, when messages are most likely to be noticed and acted upon.
